In this series of blog postings, we feature our alumni as they talk about their experience being in the program as well as their unforgettable moments as former XU DevCom students.

Why did you choose XU DevCom?

For me, at that time, there’s no other school but Xavier (Ateneo) and because I have always been convinced since HS that communication is my strength that is why I chose DevCom at Xavier.

Tell us about your experience with the program.

I have no regrets whatsoever enrolling in DevCom. I am convinced that I took the right course. It helped me with my first work (well “ministry” in the parlance of the religious sector) which is at church but even beyond that scope I find DevCom principles very relevant.

There are so many experiences I had when I was a DevCom student that are worth remembering, that made an impact on me, but right now what I can recall is that time when I had no one to eat lunch with (I was first year back then and was a transferee and so I really dont have friends pa) and so the cut the story short I found my self eating lunch (sandwich) in the comfort room on the second floor of the SC building. HAHAHA.

But DevCom taught me to interact, to develop my people skills , to be people-oriented, to be purposive…

The people – my classmates and my teachers – are themselves the “experience” that taught me… that I cannot forget.

Are you using what you learned in college with your work now?

DEFINITELY! Learning theories in Educational Communication, Journalism, the basic principle of comm of know your audience, and a lot more.

I believe I am called to create change in the academe through teaching and so DevCom is for me. I am glad that I was enrolled in a course that also teaches about being purposive.

It’s also worth mentioning, base in my experience with my batch, that there were those who admit that they are not competent in writing, for example, but with sheer dedication, they have learned and are now in the Comms Dept of big NGOs.

Would you recommend studying DevCom?

YES, yes, yes!

When my cousin asked me (he’s also a DevCom grad, in the person of Ralph Sigmund Maglacion, now he’s affiliated with a bank, if I’m not mistaken) “Kuya, unsay tsada na course akong kwaon sa college?” Being purpose-driven, I replied,

“I think it is not a matter of unsay tsada, kay daghan man tsada ng kurso… i think it is a question of unsay para sa imoha nga match sa tawag sa imong life.
