In this series of blog postings, we feature our alumni as they talk about their experience being in the program as well as their unforgettable moments as former XU DevCom students.

Why did you choose XU DevCom?
Ateneo de Cagayan was recommended by a doctor here in Dipolog City as an alternative to other universities in Manila and Cebu. Having heard that a DevCom course was offered by the university, my parents convinced me to consider it.
DevCom piqued my interest as being a communication course but at the same time found in the College of Agriculture.

Tell us about your experience with the program.
It was the most amazing thing in my entire teen life!!! I was a journ major so I had a lot of time to write and write and live like I was part of a publication team. We also had agriculture subjects that gave us opportunities to learn about food processing, animal husbandry and of course, my favorite, the tumba baka. Also, it was amazing to go to communities and immerse with the local people of Cdeo and Misamis Oriental as we visited Medina way back in 2011.
What is your current job?
I am a college instructor in Andres Bonifacio College. I worked here ever since 2013. I am an ABC graduate and teaching has been my vehicle for supporting the next generation of leaders. I am also currently in my third year of law school in the same institution.
Are you using what you learned in college?
Definitely. I had handled mass communication subjects back in 2013 and 2014. The theories are not that far removed from what I learned. Also, I had been the school paper adviser so what I learned in my journalism days paid off. The teaching styles of my Devcom teachers have helped me foster communities between my students and the people around them.
DevCom teachers have the tendency to be inclusive of people regardless of race or social status. Community visits to farms are frequent.
Devcom also prepared me for law school in some ways. I have become less sensitive to criticisms in the way I write down essays.
Would you recommend studying DevCom?
Yes! It is multi-disciplinary, teaches the youth to be inclusive, critical thinking yet creative in addressing social concerns. I would also recommend them to memorize the meaning of Devcom though.
