Why did you choose XU DevCom?

To study at Xavier University Ateneo de Cagayan was one dream that my parents made it happened. The choice of school was a primary requirement for me back then and the college course to take has to be in line with “communication”. This is mainly because English grades in the Secondary level posted high.

Development Communication was unfamiliar yet base on the curriculum presented it suits to my ambition and at 17 years old I wanted to become a Newscaster someday.

Tell us about your experience with the program.

Just like any other college course, I undergone various minor subjects like English, Math, Religious Studies, Physics, Chemistry, Philosophy, “NO Accounting thank God”. The excitement and the appreciation of DEVCOM sank in when we had our field trip at Bohol for Basic Photography Class and at CEBU City for the Different Media Platforms.

When I chose Educational Communication as my major, I was able to appreciate more on the art of graphics lay-outing with side activities on videography.

On a deeper point of view, EDUCOM practitioners’ responsibility is to provide different means or various medium to educate the identified audience which for one are farmers or other rural community workers.

The broader appreciation was embraced during my major school years (3rd and 4th) much more during my On-The-Job Training at Ramon Aboitiz Foundation in Cebu City. My major contribution was thru a Feature Article published at Cebu Daily News regarding Women Empowerment.

What is your current job?

I am currently the Assistant Branch Manager of The SM Store CDO Downtown Premier. I have been with SM for 11 years now.

Are you using what you learned in college?

YES. My expertise lies in Customer Service, Sales, and Marketing. Those 3 aspects were put into one mainly because of how I was trained back then as a DEVCOM student.

Would you recommend studying DevCom?

A BIG YES! Use DEVCOM as a tool to guide the new and young generation. With the young ones’ radical thinking, I think it is important for them to still appreciate tradition in line with “communication”, put their thoughts in the correct perspective. This will help the academic institutions to provide better graduates in the future.
