Why did you choose DevCom?

I initially wanted to get my college degree in Manila but my parents wanted me to stay in Cagayan de Oro. And since I graduated from Xavier University High School, I guess it was only natural for me to enroll in Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan. I was not exactly sure which program to take but when I saw that XU offered Development Communication, I decided to give it a try simply because of the word “communication.”

Tell us about your experience with the program.

Despite of what little idea I had about Development Communication, I can say that it was one of the best decisions I made. The program helped me realize what I really wanted to do—empower poor families and communities.

I remember going on immersions and visiting communities in Bukidnon and Cagayan de Oro to experience the different living conditions of families we consider as urban and rural poor. We came up with communication materials that aim to empower and promote development in their communities. We also tackled different social issues through photo exhibits, concerts, information drives and a telethon. These, I believe, are what makes DevCom unique from other programs and even from other communication courses. It is an experience and a journey in itself.

What is your current Job?

I am currently working as the Donor Education Specialist for World Vision Development Foundation, Inc. I help create content and campaigns that inspire World Vision child sponsors and the public, most especially our target audience, to support programs that benefit vulnerable children in the country.

Are you using what you learned in college?

Yes, I do. Development Communication covers a lot of subjects—from theories to traditional media, to digital media, to social marketing, and even to community organizing—that are very important especially when you are asked to create fundraising content for various audiences.

Would you recommend studying DevCom?

I would definitely recommend it especially to people who want to be more involved in addressing social issues and are planning to do advocacy work someday. This program will surely help you find your voice and develop the necessary skills to become an effective development communicator.
