IN THIS SERIES OF BLOG POSTINGS, WE FEATURE OUR ALUMNI AS THEY TALK ABOUT THEIR EXPERIENCE BEING IN THE PROGRAM AS WELL AS THEIR UNFORGETTABLE MOMENTS AS FORMER XU DEVCOM STUDENTS.

Why did you choose DevCom?
When I got out of high school, I was really clueless on what program to take for college but I was sure that I wanted to make a difference in the world. Initially, I wanted to enroll under the Political Science program and work my way up to become a successful lawyer.
One day, my aunt asked me what I wanted to do in the future. I told her I wanted to travel the world and get paid while talking to other people. We had quite a laugh but then she said that I might consider enrolling for Development Communication – that way I might end up being an ambassador.
Tell us about your experience with the program
The musical play Rent had a song that asked “How do you measure a year in the life?” I ask the same question “How do you measure a year in DevCom?”
I suggest that you measure it in cups of choco milk, in miles and in smiles.
Being in DevCom, is no easy task. People might say that we are having things the easy way out but I will tell you that it is as stressful and challenging as any undergraduate program there is. One needs to run after deadlines, respondents, outputs, ideas, strategies and opportunities. Throughout my years of stay in the program, the choco milk in Magis canteen has been my comfort drink. Just giving you enough to beat the energy gap.
Most of all, kindly measure it by smiles. The smiles, and occasional ugly-crying, I have shared with my classmates are definitely what I will remember. Those were moments of pure joy and fun which greatly shaped my college years. More than that, the smiles given to us by the communities we visit and help will forever be sketched in my mind. I came out of college feeling accomplished not because I have greatly earned academic awards and recognitions but because I am sure that in this lifetime I have been able to start creating small dents of impact and little ripples of change in the society.
What is your current job?
Tech Camp Coordinator for Equal Access International – Philippines.
Are you using what you learned in college?
Yes. Being in development work, I always look back on how to properly approach people, how to design effective campaigns and projects and how to communicate your thoughts and ideas properly.
