53 kites pervaded the sky on Friday, May 10, as PeaceKwela, a social campaign spearheaded by incoming sophomore students of XU DevCom, held its Kite Festival for Peace at the Xavier University Soccer Field.

The kites symbolize PeaceKwela’s aim to “make peace fun”.

“Kite-flying is a Filipino tradition that we miss doing. We wanted to bring this tradition back, this time with a significant cause for peace,” said Joshua Delos Reyes, the campaign team leader.

The participating kites, which includes diamond-shaped ones and white doves, were hand-designed by the SK youth from Cagayan de Oro City and Misamis Oriental during the PeaceKwela’s KAMPayapaan in the same week. “It was very humbling for me to make a kite especially for someone like me who wasn’t able to do it as a child. I want people to realize that just like in obtaining peace, in everything that we do, we should learn to be humble and go back to our roots” said Colleen Cornilla, 1st place winner.
