In this series of blog postings, we feature our alumni as they talk about their experience being in the program as well as their unforgettable moments as former XU DevCom students.

Why did you choose XU DevCom?
I was a member of the radio broadcasting team and I was into theater way back in high school, my extra-curricular involvements influenced my decision on what course to take in college. I stumbled upon Development Communication in XU and so I decided to interview a friend (Arrabail Caracho) who was a current student at that time. What struck me about what she said is that if you want to help others while doing what you’re passionate about then XU DevCom is for you.
Tell us about your experience with the program.
I would say that my experience with XU DevCom was a roller-coaster ride. Parts of it were very good and parts of it were very challenging but it taught me so much about embracing diversity, patience, teamwork, prioritization, and leadership.
Part of who I am today is because of my experiences in XU DevCom. I wasn’t confined in the four walls of the classroom, I was encouraged to immerse myself in the community, understand how communication plays a crucial role in development, and learn beyond the theories.
Some of the highlights of my experiences are: Nagsaka og bukid, nakipuyo kauban mga IPs, nag-photowalk sa landfill, nag-gama og videos, nag-conduct og seminar, nag-acting sa theater, nagtanom og palay, nagpakaon og farm animals, nagtumba og baka.

What is your current job?
I currently work for the Office of the Vice President (OVP) as the Program Officer for Angat Buhay Women while also doing my volunteer work for Mindanao Pride – a coalition of LGBTIQ+ individuals, organizations and allies promoting the rights and welfare of the LGBTIQ+ community in Mindanao. (Angat Buhay is the anti-poverty alleviation program of OVP that seeks to bring together local government units, development organizations, and individuals to address the needs of families in the farthest and poorest communities.)

Are you using what you learned in college?
Yes, communication plays a significant role in my position as a Program Officer that requires me to oversee program development, seeks grants and proposals, manage projects and budgets. All forms, elements and processes of communication is integral to my day-to-day work in dealing with my colleagues and other stakeholders.
Would you recommend studying DevCom?
I would recommend DevCom to those who want to find their passion and make it their career while helping others at the same time. The course provides you with theoretical and pragmatic approach in development grounded in the Mindanao experience. If you want a memorable college life with a social purpose then take DevCom in Xavier Ateneo.
